Lake Kournas is the only natural freshwater lake and is located in a magnificent landscape, between the western slopes of the White Mountains and the fertile plain of Georgioupolis. The lake and its surroundings constitute a very important ecosystem for Greece, as this corner of the Apokoronas province is one of the few areas of Crete where there is abundant fresh water throughout the year.

After a brief stop in the cosmopolitan and rapidly developing Georgioupolis village, we ascend to the village of Vamos. A village with a special history, full of resistance and peculiarities that modern life is unable to inherit. The village was founded by Arab invaders in the 8th century, who fled to Crete after being expelled from Andalusia. Over the years, it has managed to host people from many different parts of the planet in its embrace, while Christians and Muslims coexist harmoniously together, despite the divisions of those times. Vamos is now renowned for its gastronomic experiences as locals have now focused on promoting ethical, sustainable ecotourism and agrotourism.
